How many points do I need for Australia PR?
The minimum to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) is 65 points. However, simply reaching 65 points does not guarantee an invitation the actual cutoff score in each invitation round is usually higher, and it varies by visa subclass and occupation.
VisaMinimum to lodge EOIRecent invitation cutoff (approx.)Trend
1896570-85 ptsCompetitive - most occupations need 80+
19065 (60 with nomination)65–75 pts (varies by state)Some states invite at 65 for in-demand jobs
49165 (50 base + 15 bonus)Effectively 65–75 after bonusMost accessible entry point
The total timeline from start to visa grant typically ranges from 12 to 36 months depending on your visa subclass and how quickly you can prepare. Here is a typical breakdown:
  • Skills assessment: 2–6 months (varies by assessing body — ACS is faster, Engineers Australia can take longer)
  • IELTS / PTE score: 1–3 months to prepare and test if needed
  • EOI submitted to SkillSelect: Immediate — same day once you have the skills assessment and points
  • Wait for invitation: 1–24 months depending on your score and occupation demand. High scorers (80+) are often invited within months.
  • Visa application after invitation: 60 days to lodge. Then 6–18 months processing for 189/190; 9–18 months for 491.
Both lead to direct Permanent Residency and have the same minimum points threshold (65), but they differ in three key ways:
  • Sponsorship: The 189 requires no sponsorship — you apply independently. The 190 requires a state or territory government to nominate you, which means applying to a state and meeting their specific criteria.
  • Bonus points: The 190 nomination gives you an automatic 5-point bonus, making it more accessible if your base score is between 60–70.
  • Obligation to stay: On the 190 you must live and work in the nominating state for at least 2 years after the visa is granted. The 189 has no such obligation.
Yes — a positive skills assessment is mandatory for all three PR pathways (189, 190, 491). It is an evaluation by an Australian government-approved assessing body confirming that your qualifications and work experience match a specific skilled occupation on the relevant occupation list.

The assessing body depends on your occupation. Common ones for Indian applicants include:

  • ACS (Australian Computer Society) — IT and software professionals
  • Engineers Australia — Engineers (mechanical, civil, electrical, etc.)
  • VETASSESS — Accountants, managers, many professional occupations
  • CPA / ICAA — Chartered and certified accountants
  • AHPRA — Nurses, doctors, dentists, allied health
  • TRA — Trade workers (electricians, plumbers, chefs)
Yes, absolutely. You do not need to be in Australia at any point during the PR application process. Here is what you can do entirely from India:
  • Obtain your skills assessment (all assessing bodies accept applications from overseas)
  • Sit your English test (IELTS and PTE are available across India)
  • Lodge your Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect
  • Receive an invitation to apply
  • Lodge your full visa application with all documents

You are only required to enter Australia once your visa is granted, to activate it. After activation you can return to India and re-enter Australia whenever you choose.

After you submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) in the SkillSelect system, the following process begins:
  • EOI is ranked: SkillSelect ranks your EOI against all other candidates in the same occupation by points score and EOI submission date. Ties are broken by submission date — so submitting earlier helps.
  • Invitation rounds run: The Department of Home Affairs runs invitation rounds — typically monthly for 189 and rolling for 190/491. The top-ranked EOIs receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
  • You receive an ITA: When invited, you have 60 days to lodge your complete visa application. Missing this deadline means you must re-submit your EOI.
  • Visa application lodged: You submit all supporting documents — identity, health checks, police clearances, skills assessment, employment evidence. A case officer is assigned.
  • Visa granted: Once processing is complete (6–18 months), your visa is granted. You have 5 years to make your first entry into Australia to activate it.
