Episode Summary:

Today we will have a chat about the migration planning levels for the upcoming financial year. The overall allocation hasn’t changed. It’s still holding firm at 185,000 places. What’s different is the more onshore-focused program to help migrants already living & working in Australia make the permanent transition.

Final thoughts:

Our Advice to Listeners

Our advice to listeners is simple — do not wait passively for the next invitation round. The skilled migration landscape is constantly evolving, and those who plan ahead are always better positioned than those who react. Whether you are currently on a Student Visa, Visitor Visa, or Bridging Visa, the time to act is now. Understanding and preparing for your onshore shift to Australia well in advance can be the difference between securing permanent residency and missing a critical window of opportunity.

Check Your Visa Timeline

Start by checking how long you have remaining on your current visa — Student Visa, Visitor Visa, or Bridging Visa. Running out of time without a plan in place can severely limit your options. Your visa expiry date should be the anchor point around which your entire migration strategy is built. Never let it creep up on you unexpectedly.

Be Onshore When It Counts

Make sure you are onshore if you want your application to be prioritised. The onshore shift to Australia is not just a logistical consideration — it is a strategic one. Being physically present in Australia when invitation rounds open can significantly improve your chances of having your application processed faster. If you are currently offshore and serious about your PR pathway, now is the time to plan your return.

Know Your Occupation

Check your occupation carefully to see which is the most viable pathway for you. As discussed in this episode, the four-tier occupation structure plays a major role in determining how quickly invitations are issued. An individual with multiple occupations has the advantage of choosing the most favourable tier, so explore all your options before committing to a single pathway.

Employer Sponsorship — A Vantage Point

See if you can find an employer willing to sponsor you, as that would put you at a significant vantage point for points-based applications. Employer sponsorship not only strengthens your overall application but can also open alternative visa pathways that purely points-based routes cannot. However, exercise caution — always do your due diligence before signing a contract with any potential employer. Sponsorship scams are real, and falling victim to one can jeopardise your entire migration journey. Seek professional advice before committing.

Get Your Skills Assessed Early

Do not underestimate how long a skills assessment takes. It is a drawn-out affair that can take months depending on the assessing body and your occupation. Start this process as early as possible. The onshore shift to Australia becomes far smoother when your skills assessment is already in place, allowing you to lodge your Expression of Interest without unnecessary delays.

Stay Ahead of the Curve

Staying ahead of the curve should be your overarching strategy at every stage. Monitor invitation trends, keep your points score updated, and revisit your strategy regularly as policies and occupation ceilings change.

Have a Fall-Back Plan

Finally, and critically — always have a fall-back plan. Not every pathway will work out as expected, and having an alternative route mapped out in advance ensures that a setback in one area does not derail your entire journey toward permanent residency.
