On 7 Dec 2024, the Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) is replaced Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa to simplify and streamline the process for skilled migrants and Australian employers. This new visa offers flexibility and certainty by allowing skilled workers to stay in Australia for up to 4 years, with a clear pathway to permanent residence

Key Features of the Skills in Demand (SID) Visa

The SID visa offers 3 distinct streams to meet the diverse needs of Australia’s workforce:

Core Skills Stream
- For applicants with occupations on the CSOL (Consolidated Skilled Occupation List) that have been identified as in shortage.
- Must earn at least AUD 73,150 annually or meet the salary threshold as specified.
- Designed to support skilled workers filling gaps in Australia’s labour market.
Specialist Skills Stream
- Recognises that highly skilled migrants enhance national productivity and innovation.
- Open to applicants in almost all occupations under ANZSCO 2022 (excluding ANZSCO Major Group levels 3, 7, and 8)
- Requires a minimum AUD 135,000 salary or higher, aligned with Australian worker pay standards.
Labour Agreement Stream (Transitioning to Essential Skills Stream)
- This stream will soon be replaced by the Essential Skills Stream as it adapts to evolving workforce needs.

New Eligibility Pathways

Core Skills Stream:
- Designed for applicants working in shortage occupations on the CSOL and paid a minimum salary threshold of AUD 73,150 annually.
Specialist Skills Stream:
- For highly skilled workers earning at least AUD 135,000 annually, focusing on occupations critical to innovation and national productivity.

Understanding the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL)

The CSOL (Core Skills Occupation List) replaces the multiple skilled occupation lists that were previously used for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS visa). The CSOL identifies over 450 occupations across vital sectors, including:

Construction
Cyber Security
Agriculture
Health

The CSOL was developed based on comprehensive labour market analysis and stakeholder consultations conducted by Jobs and Skills Australia. It will only apply to the SID Core Skills stream and Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) visa (Direct Entry stream).

TSS Visa Transition

Applications for the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa officially closed on 6 December 2024. However, all outstanding applications lodged before this date will continue to be processed under the existing rules.

TSS visa holders will still have access to pathways leading to permanent residence, provided they meet all necessary eligibility requirements.
